Sequencing Activity for Kids: Order Everyday Steps

A 5-minute unplugged coding game for preschoolers: put opening a cupboard, taking a snack and closing the door in the right order.

This screen activity practices putting necessary steps in order. Your child needs to understand “before” and “after” and know what a cupboard door does. No coding app is needed.

How to play

  1. Read the starting point and the goal together. Ask which action must happen before a snack can be taken from the cupboard.
  2. Let your child choose a sequence. Check each step against the starting point, then check whether the snack is in hand and the door is shut at the end.

You will need

Your turn

Start: A snack is inside a closed cupboard; your hand is empty. Goal: The snack is in your hand and the cupboard door is closed. Which order works?

Answer and explanation

The closed door must be opened before you can take the snack. After taking it, close the door to reach the goal.

Make it easier

Say the three actions aloud and use your hands to mime opening, taking, and closing before looking at the choices.

Make it more challenging

Ask your child to explain why closing the door before taking the snack cannot meet the goal.

This can be done entirely on screen. If you act it out, an adult should choose a safe, reachable cupboard and handle any food.
