Make Up a Short Story Together

You do not need a detailed plan to tell a story together. A favorite character, a familiar place, and one little surprise can get you started.
Ask three questions
Who is in the story? Where are they? What unexpected thing happens? The answers do not have to be realistic. A very polite dinosaur turning up in the garden is a perfectly good beginning.
Take turns with the sentences
Start with “One day…” and add the character your child chose. Invite them to say what happens next. If they get stuck, offer two possibilities: “Did the gate open, or did someone call their name?” Let them choose or invent a third option.
Give it a small ending
The story can finish when the character finds what they were looking for, gets home, or decides what to do tomorrow. Write down a title if you like. Drawing the story can be a game for another day.
The Blub Stories examples show how a few details about a child can change the opening of a tale. You can try the same idea aloud together.
